If you are a podcaster, musician, or actor working during the pandemic, having an in-home recording studio of some kind could be essential to your business. This year, the majority of recording work has moved into our homes, but often still demands professional-grade sound. Unfortunately, creating a home studio is not the most intuitive DIY project. In fact, you may feel completely lost without a professional to guide you. But with a little investment and ingenuity, you can produce studio-quality sound from your home. Here are some steps to follow to get the best sound quality from your makeshift space.
For anyone new, you'll need to make sure that you have a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) which is software to house multiple audio tracks and apply effects via small programs called pluggins. You will also need an interface (or DI Direct Box) to plug microphones and instruments into your computer. Once you have that, You can use some of the many FREE VST pluggins that are available.
A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is an electronic device or application software used for recording, editing and producing audio files. DAWs come in a wide variety of configurations from a single software program on a laptop, to an integrated stand-alone unit, all the way to a highly complex configuration of numerous components controlled by a central computer. Regardless of configuration, modern DAWs have a central interface that allows the user to alter and mix multiple recordings and tracks into a final produced piece. For most of us you will be using either a PC, laptop or MAC with DAW software.
I bought Protools back in 2000, which my first DAW. Prootools is probably the DAW that I am most comfortable with, however I no longer use Protools for recording and editing. Long Story short, the company has changed hands several times since and now you must play an anual subscription fee to use the AVID Prottols DAW Software. I refuse to pay for the subscription model for my softwre especially what is now a hobby. The other issues is that the pluggins (small programs that your DAW uses modify the sound on a track, like compression, reverb, eq, distortion, etc) Protools uses a unique format (AAX) which can be expensive. Alternatively, most other DAWs use the VST format for pluggins, which there are paid & FREE quality pluggings you can use. DAWs such as Cubase, Studio One, Logic Pro (MAC only) & Reaper all use VST pluggins. See below for some useful FREE VST pluggins.
My Personnal reccomendation here is Reaper. It is resonable priced and you can try (indefinitely for free). Reaper is versital and you can change the look and feel of it. There is an active community supporting Reaper that post Themes for this DAW. you can even make Reaper look and mostly be have like Protools (although some functionality is just different).

As a descendant of the venerable TDR Feedback Compressor product family, Kotelnikov has directly inherited several unique features such as a proven control scheme, individual release control for peak and RMS content, an intuitive user interface, and powerful, state of the art, high-precision algorithms. With a sonic signature best described as “stealthy”, Kotelnikov has the ability to manipulate the dynamic range by dramatic amounts, while carefully preserving the original tone, timbre and punch of a musical signal. As such, it is perfectly suited to stereo bus compression as well as other critical applications. The concept is “proudly digital” in the sense that it doesn’t try to emulate any previously existing device. This is the original!

Overtone GEQ was designed to allow audio engineers to apply quick EQ shape adjustments together with adding a bit of harmonic richness to the audio material (mainly mixes and sub-mixes due to a comparably high load this EQ puts on a CPU).
// Kuassa - GQ3607 Graphic Equalizer // Free 3-band Baxandall Equalizer. Has the ability to save presets.
// Voxengo - TEQ-421 (Triple-Band EQ with Harmonics) // TEQ-421 is freeware equalizer AAX, AudioUnit, and VST plugin for professional music production applications. This equalizer features only three bands (Triple EQ), finely tuned to deliver good results in many cases, thus being extremely easy to use. Beside that, the plug-in features internal non-parametric harmonic coloration modules (derived from HarmoniEQ plug-in) which produce a smooth saturation and a “presence” effect. The frequencies of the bands were carefully selected and are not adjustable. These frequencies target specific spectral areas that affect sound’s perception the most. The best use-case for this plug-in is equalization of unprocessed acoustical recordings that usually lack in modern balance of low, mid, and high frequencies. The plug-in is equally useful on individual tracks, groups, and master bus. It was designed by tuning to a set of various sound sources, including vocals, acoustic guitars, drums, basses, and full mixes.
// Kuassa - BasiQ // BasiQ is an acronym for Baxandall Simulation Equalizer, a free 3-band equalizer plugin with photorealistic graphics from Kuassa. As the name implies, the engine is modeled after the design of the classic Baxandall Equalizer, well known for its smooth shelves and natural-sounding response, similar to the tone control of hi-fi systems. The simple controls allow you to shape your source material appropriately and concisely, opening up air, applying shimmer, or giving an extra oomph to the low end where needed. This straightforward equalizer is well-suited for both mixing and mastering purposes, though the neutral characteristic of basiQ lends itself as more of a sweetening device or to give a transparent tilt to your mixes, rather than surgical frequency correction. It is best paired on the master channel with the Kratos Maximizer, another audio processing plugin from Kuassa, Inc.
// Analog Obsession - BXQ (EQ) // BXQ is a Baxandall EQ with Left/Right & Mid/Side processing.
// Analog Obsession - FIVER (EQ) // Versatile five bands equalizer with low and high shelf filters and three bands with continuously variable bandwidth. You may specify delay time in both milliseconds and samples, with a high level of precision. This plugin – being technical in its purpose – provides a basic signal delaying function only, without signal feedback or modulation capabilities. Sound Delay also features internal mid/side encoding and decoding, and allows you to delay mid and side channels independently.
// DigitalFishPhones - Floorfish // FLOORFISH is a simple expander / gate device, easy to set up and offers a broad variety of processing, ranging from slight expansion, backgound noise attenuation to extreme gating effects. What's different from similar units is the ability to scan the source and adjust the transistion curve accordingly.
// GVST - GGate // GGate is a noise gate, which silences the incoming signal once it drops below a user-defined threshold. This kind of effect is useful when source material contains background noise during "silent" passages, such as the hum of an amplifier or artefacts from an effect chain. The main portion of the source audio is usually significantly louder than this background noise, so when GGate receives an appropriate boost in amplitude, it knows that it's time to let the signal pass through.
// Thomas Mundt - LoudMax // LoudMax is a Look-Ahead Brickwall Loudness Maximizer with a clean transparent sound. It is designed to retain the original character of the music as much as possible even at high compression levels. Main range of application: Audio Mastering & Output Limiter/Maximizer.

It’s a unique stereo widener plug-in that is completely “mono-compatible” — any signal that has been widened will always remain in phase with itself, even when it is summed back into mono. Best of all, Wider is a completely free plug-in!
// Voxengo - Stereo Touch // This professional AAX, AudioUnit, and VST audio plugin implements a classic technique of transforming a monophonic track into spacious stereophonic track by means of mid/side coding technique. Stereo Touch is most effective on monophonic sounds without overly sharp transients: it works great for both acoustic and electric/overdriven guitars, synthetic pad sounds and even vocals. By means of this plugin you can easily get spacious, and even “surround” sounding tracks, without utilizing a double-tracked recording technique. Basically, the plugin takes a mono input signal and generates a stereo output signal. This plugin can also work with multi-channel input signal, but in this case all channels get processed independently of each other like they are separate mono input signals, and then all resulting stereo signals get mixed together to produce a single stereo output signal.
// DigitalFishPhones - Spitfish // Spitfish is a dead-easy to use de-esser, aimed mainly at mono or stereo vocal tracks. Just like classic analog de-essers, this unit dynamically filters out harsh, annoying s-like sounds that would otherwise 'spit' in your face.
// iZotope - Vocal Doubler // Essentially it's a subtle delay / chorus mixed with a stereo enhancer. iZotope recommends using this on dry vocals (aka vocals without any effects on it). iZotope Vocal Doubler is a free plug-in designed to enhance your vocal with a natural doubling effect, adding richness and depth. Our acclaimed doubling technology has been reimagined with a brand new interactive UI dedicated to helping you achieve a great double faster than ever.
// TB ProAudio - GSatPlus (Saturation) // GSat+ is derived from the saturation module on the TBProAudio CS5501V2 channel strip plug-in, but adds extra features requested and suggested by the Gearspace.com team. You can go crazy with Equalizer & Saturator and then blend with DRY sound to get best balance!
// Auburn Sounds - Graillon 2 Free Edition // Its pitch correction module is efficient and easy to use, earning Graillon 2 the number one spot on the autotune freebie list. It is compatible with all digital audio workstations on Windows and macOS. Autotuning vocals with Graillon 2 couldn’t be easier. Place it as an insert effect in your vocal mix channel (or your live vocal processing chain), turn on the Correction module, and you’re good to go. Those who require more control over the pitch correction process can limit the note range to a particular scale, adjust the pitch correction speed, and define the autotune algorithm’s note detection range. Graillon 2 can sound more or less artificial thanks to its flexible pitch correction engine, depending on your project’s stylistic requirements. The mix knob on the right-hand side of the user interface can further reduce the autotune module’s impact where needed.
// MeldaProduction- MAutoPitch // MAutoPitch is in no way a less capable Antares Auto-Tune alternative than Graillon 2. Whereas the pitch correction features are roughly the same between the two plugins, MeldaProduction’s product adds a few bonus tools like stereo width adjustment, automatic gain control, and a limiter. This free autotune effect is flexible and easy to operate, with adjustable speed, range, scale, and depth. The added stereo widening feature can be helpful in a vocal processing chain, but make sure to double-check your mix in mono when using it. Comes Free with the M FreeFX Bundle from MeldaProduction.
// Graham Yeadon - GSnap // GSnap is an old freeware autotune plugin. It was the first free autotune VST on the market. Pitch correction software was still somewhat of a rarity back in the day when GSnap was released. In terms of its features and design, GSnap is still a fantastic pitch correction tool. At first look, it looks pretty similar to Graillon 2 and MAutoPitch. One excellent feature that sets it apart is the ability to tune the processed audio signal according to the MIDI notes on the input. In other words, you don’t have to rely on the plugin’s automatic pitch detection algorithm. Instead, the user can feed the correct MIDI notes into the plugin and let it take care of the rest.
// g200kg - KeroVee // KeroVee is another old-school pitch correction tool, released way back in 2010. Although it looks slightly less slick than the previous three autotune VSTs on this list, KeroVee’s feature set is on par with the competition. In fact, it also features the MIDI input mode seen in GSnap. Although MIDI input isn’t required for that classic “T-Pain autotune effect,” the feature is convenient if you want absolute control over the vocal pitch. In a way, KeroVee is closer to Celemony Melodyne than Antares Auto-Tune.
// UnitedPlugins - TrapTune Free Edition // TrapTune Free Edition is a free autotune plugin by UnitedPlugins. It is a freeware lightweight edition of the full TrapTune pitch correction software. The plugin’s main limitation is that some of the pitch correction controls are locked. However, users can browse the included presets, which cover a wide range of popular autotune effects.
// Resonant Cavity - Voloco // Voloco is a simple free autotune VST that was designed for use exclusively as a creative tool. Don’t expect to achieve subtle vocal pitch correction with Voloco. This is an intentionally robotic-sounding autotune plugin for use in electronic and urban music.
// Analog Obsession - ChannelV // CHANNEV is a channel-strip with mic preamp, de-esser, line-Amp, 4 band equalizer, compressor, limiter and tape saturation!
// Analog Obsession - FrankCS // Ultimate analog equalizer is now better than ever with selectable preamp and compressor! Selected each band from 4 different well-known modules and now, you can select frequencies! Two custom preamps with compensated gain (Solid-State & Tube). Compressor with two custom detection circuit (Solid-State & Tube).
// Variety Of Sound - preFIX // preFIX is a pre-mixing and audio alignment tool which typically takes place upfront the mixing process.
